Walnut is a dark-brown rich
elegant hardwood. Not everyone can afford this wood for their kitchen
decoration or furniture making. So, if you already have walnut furniture, you
must maintain and protect the same. This applies to walnut cabinets as well. As
it comes to taking the right care of walnut wood, oil penetration is
unavoidable. Oil penetration protects the wood while bringing out the best from
the same.
Wood
preparation for oiling
When it comes to preparing your
walnut
kitchen cabinets for oiling, make sure you apply the oil only to
the raw wood. And you will get this raw wood by slight sanding. Sanding helps
to open the pores in the wood. However, this doesn’t require you to be an
orbital sander. Just take a piece of 220 to 400 grit sandpaper and fold it in
half. Now do the job of sanding by hand. Sanding should be done with the wood
grains. After the process is done, use a dry cloth to wipe thedust. But never
use a wet cloth because moisture or water can raise the wood grains.
Two coats of oil
Use tung oil or boiled linseed
oil as finishing oil for walnut furniture including walnut cabinets. Both
linseed oil and tung oil harden in the timber while sealing the grains from
moisture. As a result, the wood will get an attractive yet muted polish. To get
such a finishing, you will need to apply two coats of oil. Use a rag for oiling
the wood. As the first coat of oil dries, sand the wood with 600 grit
sandpaper. And then only apply the second coat. Whether walnut furniture or white
shaker cabinets, it may
take 3 to 4 days for the oil to dry completely. A finishing coat with a
non-silicone paste waste can provide a great finishing touch. But it should be
buffed with lambswool buffer.
As it comes to maintaining the look and quality of walnut furniture, oiling is a must. Use proper oils to ensure the best outcomes.
